Missed Open Enrollment? Learn about Meritus

The End of Open Enrollment for Individuals and Families Does Not Mean the End of Health Insurance

March 31st, 2014 was the deadline given for individuals and families to get health insurance, either on the Federally Facilitated Marketplace or on the private Market. Businesses can still get group coverage year-round.  The Federal Marketplace and most private insurers have adhered to this enrollment guideline, however one company has chosen to accept new enrollees all year long.

This company is called Meritus. Formed on January 1st, 2014, Meritus is a nonprofit co-op insurance company with “consumer oriented and operated plans”.  Rather than having stockholders, Meritus is directed by its policyholders with an elected board of directors.

Something else that differentiates Meritus from other insurers is its plans. Utilizing the Carondolet Network of physicians and facilities, Meritus offers extensive PPO and HMO networks. They have chosen to include services in some of their plans that other carriers won’t, such as naturopathy and acupuncture. Some of Meritus’s PPO plans also offer out-of-network coverage that is identical to their in-network coverage.  Meritus also offers a second, community based HMO with physician networks located in certain areas.

For those who thought they missed their chance to finally get health insurance, there is hope. There is Meritus.
